Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Announces Largest Grants Slate Ever: $100 Million to Speed Delivery of Breast Cancer Discoveries, Cures

We are awarding more than $100 million in research grants, representing the largest single-year investment in research in our 26-year history and a 30 percent increase over last year’s award total of $77 million. The 2008 grants slate moves us closer to accomplishing our goal of investing another $2 billion in breast cancer research and community health programs by 2017.

With this year’s slate of 143 grants, Komen for the Cure has fully activated new funding mechanisms designed to speed the discovery and delivery of the cures for breast cancer. The 2008 slate funds projects designed to promote breast cancer research collaboration and cost efficiencies, arrive at reliable and replicable research results more quickly, motivate bright young investigators to commit to breast cancer research careers and keep career researchers intensely focused on breast cancer.

Mrs. Laura Bush joined Susan G. Komen for the Cure® President and CEO Hala Moddelmog and Lic. Margarita Zavala, wife of Mexico's president, March 14 at a ceremony here to initiate the country's involvement in the Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research of the Americas, an initiative that unites experts from the United States of America, Brazil, Costa Rica and Mexico to affect a measurable decrease in breast cancer incidence and mortality in the Americas.

The Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research of the Americas is an expansion of the U.S.-Middle East Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research launched by Mrs. Laura Bush and Susan G. Komen for the Cure in 2006. Brazil launched the Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research of the Americas in November 2007. Costa Rica is expected to launch its program later this year.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure^® announces the launch of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Global Promise Fund. The Fund will provide grants to non-governmental organizations to develop and implement breast health and breast cancer programs and services in countries experiencing high breast cancer incidence and death rates.

Expanding our network to the far corners of the world
The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Global Promise Fund announcement coincides with International Women's Day and sends a clear message to women around the world that Komen for the Cure is expanding its work to the far corners of the world where women need the most help. With more than 1 million women worldwide receiving a breast cancer diagnosis each year, the organization believes it is critical to increase advocacy for and education about this life-threatening disease. With $1 billion invested in the cause to date, Komen pledged last year to invest another $2 billion in research and community-based programs within the next decade to bring about a dramatic decrease in the incidence of breast cancer and deaths resulting from the disease.

"Over the next 25 years, an estimated 25 million women around the world will be diagnosed with breast cancer-and 10 million could die from the disease," said Komen for the Cure President and CEO Hala Moddelmog. "The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Global Promise Fund is specifically designed to allow donors-corporate and individual-to help fund targeted projects in specific countries around the world to stem the growing global impact of breast cancer."

Susan G. Komen for the Cure Sharing Grassroots Advocacy Knowledge with International Representatives in Intensive Dallas Training Session

Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, this week welcomes a landmark group of dedicated breast cancer advocates from around the world for a five-day intensive training of trainers session called Course for the Cure™. This first-of-its-kind training is key to the implementation of Komen for the Cure’s Global Initiative for Breast Cancer, announced last fall at the organization’s Ignite the Promise Global Advocate Summit held in Budapest, Hungary. The Budapest summit brought together breast cancer advocates from 30 countries, all of whom shared information and ideas on how to stem the growing global impact of breast cancer.

Countries participating in Komen’s Global Initiative for Breast Cancer include Brazil, Costa Rica, Ghana, India, Jordan, Mexico, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates. The overall objective of the Global Initiative is in keeping with Komen’s domestic agenda: find ways to decrease breast cancer incidence and mortality.

International Conference Convenes Young Breast Cancer Survivors, Leading Healthcare Experts to Address Breast Cancer in Young Women

January 10, 2008 — The world’s leading breast cancer experts will bring the latest medical, research and quality-of-life information on breast cancer in pre-menopausal women to an estimated 1,000 young breast cancer survivors, caregivers and medical professionals from around the world at the 8^th Annual Conference for Young Women Affected by Breast Cancer, to be held at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront, February 22-24, 2008.

A collaborative effort of three nonprofit organizations — Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC), Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Young Survival Coalition (YSC), this three-day event is the only international educational conference that focuses on the unique issues of young breast cancer survivors.

Breast Cancer Research Stamp Reauthorized

Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, celebrates Congressional extension of the Breast Cancer Research Stamp Act through 2011. Bill S. 597, approved unanimously by the U.S. Senate last night and by the House on December 11, now awaits signature by President Bush.

Without the legislation, the stamp would have expired at year’s end. The bill also ensures greater accountability by requiring annual reports to Congress detailing how proceeds from the Breast Cancer Research Stamp are allocated.

785.6 million Breast Cancer Research stamps sold since 1998
The United States Postal Service has sold more than 785.6 million Breast Cancer Research stamps since 1998, making it the top-selling commemorative stamp in U.S. history. By law, 70 percent of funds raised through the sale of the stamp are distributed to the National Institutes of Health, while 30 percent goes to the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense. More than $58.3 million dollars for critical breast cancer research and treatment programs have been raised to date.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and the more than 50,000 advocates who wrote letters urging reauthorization of the stamp, applauds Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX), and Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-MO) for leading the reauthorization effort. Gratitude goes also to Representatives Joe Baca (D-CA), who introduced a similar bill in the House, as well as the 62 Senators and the more than 200 Representatives who co-sponsored the bills.

“We are grateful for Congressional support of this now historic effort to provide additional funding for breast cancer research,” said Diane Balma, vice president of public policy for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. “The stamp is an easy way for people to show their support for breast cancer research and join the global movement fighting for a world without breast cancer.”

The most frequently diagnosed cancer among women, breast cancer is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths among women. However, with advances in research, treatment and early detection, there are more than two million breast cancer survivors living in the U.S. today.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure has been a consistent supporter of the Breast Cancer Research Stamp and has advocated for its continued reauthorization.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure Announces Recipients of the 2007 Komen Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction

Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the global leader in the movement to end breast cancer forever, has announced the recipients of the 2007 Komen Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction, the organization’s highest award of merit.

This year’s recipients are Leslie Bernstein, Ph.D., professor, department of preventive medicine and the inaugural holder of the AFLAC, Inc. Chair in Cancer Research at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and Joe W. Gray, Ph.D., director, division of life sciences, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, California.

Dr. Bernstein and Dr. Gray will be formally recognized during the 30th annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS), a major international gathering of breast cancer researchers, clinicians and patient advocacy organizations, December 13-16 in San Antonio. The two recipients will deliver lectures for SABCS attendees at 3:45 p.m. December 13 in Exhibit Hall D of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. Both will receive cash awards of $25,000 and a crystal award.

Researchers From Around the World Gather to Discuss Triple Negative Breast Cancer

SAN ANTONIO - December 12, 2007 - The Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation (TNBC), and Susan G. Komen for the Cure convened one of the first "think tanks" dedicated specifically to triple negative breast cancer, a particularly aggressive and difficult-to-treat form of the disease. The meeting was held prior to the opening of the annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

Thirty researchers, from leading cancer institutions in North America and Europe, were invited to share information on the latest science, to discuss potential research collaborations and develop a scientific agenda for future research and clinical trials to find effective treatment for women with this subtype of breast cancer. The meeting also marked the first joint effort between Komen for the Cure and TNBC to share resources to accelerate research and progress for these women who are not benefiting from recent advances.

Mrs. Laura Bush Praises Susan G. Komen for the Cure on Good Morning America

Good Morning America Host and breast cancer survivor Robin Roberts interviewed Mrs. Laura Bush today from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on her involvement in the U.S.-Middle East Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research. Mrs. Bush spoke fondly of her long-term volunteer service with Komen for the Cure and credited the organization’s work these past 25 years in changing the world. She explained that in many ways the UAE and Saudi Arabia are where the U.S. was back in the early 1980s, before Komen changed the culture and clinic – making it okay for women to talk about breast cancer publicly.

Mrs. Bush is joined on this historic trip to the UAE and Saudi Arabia by Komen CEO and President Hala Moddelmog, as well as representatives from the State Department and Dr. Kendra Woods from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. This is part of Komen for the Cure’s 10-country pilot expansion initiative announced during the first-ever Susan G. Komen for the Cure Global Advocate Summit last month.

After visiting Abu Dhabi, UAE, the tour travels to Dubai, UAE and then to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Riyadh. Hala will speak at the Riyadh launch event in addition to Mrs. Bush, Dr. Abdullah Al-Amro, CEO, King Fahad Medical City, Dr. Woods and Dr. Samia Al-Amoudi, a delegate to the Global Advocate Summit.

Revving up for Passionately Pink for the Cure

We've mentioned it before, but this year we wanted to do something big for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, something that would really get the word out and to get people involved. We have partnered with a diverse group of celebrities from many facets of popular culture and have challenged each to go Passionately Pink for the Cure™ during the month of October.

The Passionately Pink for the Cure program encourages companies, schools, religious and social organizations as well as individuals across the country to pick any day in October to wear pink and make at least a $5 contribution to Komen for the Cure.

We would like to extend the same challenge to the online community to get involved and spread the word this October. Komen Partners with State Department, M.D. Anderson and Institute of International Education for Latin America

Speaking at a White House Conference on the Americas this past Tuesday, First Lady Laura Bush announced the Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research of the Americas.

Joining ranks with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the U.S. State Department, the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the Institute of International Education's West Coast Center (IIE), the partnership plans to unite experts from both the United States and Latin America in an effort to further the scope of breast cancer research and hopefully bring us closer to finding a cure.

Branching off of the U.S.-Middle East Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research, this particular initiative is intended to provide services to organizations in Brazil, Costa Rica and Mexico.
